Back in 2013 when I was recovering from my emergency surgery. I was given a host of powerful drugs and antibiotics. To say I felt horrible was a joke of an understatement. I was about 99-100 lbs. my stomach was destroyed. I was constantly vomiting from the medication and my body being too weak to eat so it rejected what I put into it.
I reached out to people who knew more than I did, what they explained to me lead me on a journey. What I found out what stunning. One weeks’ worth of antibiotics can alter your gut flora for up to a year, or longer or permanently. Evidence showed that 66 people who were tested before and after taking antibiotics 12 months after exposure showed the salivary microbiome recovered quickly. However the fecal microbiome was severely affected by most antibiotics (Zaura et al, 2015)
I found myself, desperate to make some forward progress. I was wasting away, my body felt like a stranger. I was so week with dizziness and constant headaches from lack of proper nutrition. I discovered that I had to change my diet if I had any hope of healing my gut. I transitioned to simple vegan whole foods and used a raw meal replacement. It was the only thing I could keep down. I began to incorporate raw whole plant based foods. Trial and error showed me what my body could keep down and what I wouldn’t be able to digest till my digestive system was healed.
I learned that every day herbs we ignore, are extremely strong natural antibiotics. I began to eat fresh raw garlic gloves daily, taking oregano oil at 80% strength. I ate cilantro by the handfuls. Adding it every fruit smoothie I made. Eventually I saw progress. I stopped having blood in my stool, my headaches went away. The bloating and gas went away, I could keep food down without burping it back up, and no more indigestion. I could actually sleep better and the anxiety I felt went away.
Garlic very effectively kills off a wide variety of gut pathogens including candida while simultaneously serving as food (prebiotic) to encourage the growth and survival of beneficial microbes. Dr. Campbell-McBride explains that garlic, however, helps resolve an illness no matter what type of microbes are causing the problem – bacteria, virus, or fungus!
Over the years, we now have a fresh understanding that the relationship from every system in the body from the brain, immune system, hormonal systems is remarkable. Micro-flora is to your genetic expression, immune system, body weight and composition, mental health, memory, and minimizing your risk for numerous diseases, from diabetes to cancer! It is essential that we start taking a look at our daily habits to truly appreciate how we are affecting our microbiome and the direct correlation to our immediate state of health. Acidic foods, processed foods, artificial sugars and alcohol are weakening us on an hourly basis. It’s no wonder so many people are susceptible to catching multiple common colds etc.
