Happy New Year Tribe!
This is the first post of the New Year and I am so excited to talk with you all. I know that this time of year millions of people look at themselves in the mirror and say this year I will do goal A, B and C. Then soon after dealing with struggles of reality they suddenly stop or make the decision to do it tomorrow. It’s been said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Perhaps you have had a goal that you have vowed to yourself on half empty proclamations you will start a diet next Monday, or by _______ event you will wear this outfit. Yet for some reason you feel you are missing a critical piece of the success puzzle when you weren’t able to follow through. Instead of pointlessly beating yourself up, have you asked yourself why this keeps failing?
I will explain to you why. Millions of people create goals that are not sustainable due to not creating a sustainable system in place to achieve them. Followed by a lack of habit to make sure that system becomes successful and replaces the old habits. Take a minute to process this concept, you should be thinking,”hm, this makes sense” or “Yes, that’s exactly what I’m discovering!” Let me use myself and share a new goal I have been working on.
I tend to waste food, I go shopping and buy a lot of food to stock up for the week because I rationalize on Thursday when I’m off, I’ll make that recipe I saw on Instagram even though today is Sunday. Maybe throw in some “in the momen”t food craving items I know damn well I wont touch after today. Now realistically I manage a new health business and work my day job. I work 15-20 hrs. days about 6 days a week. The foods I buy are usually going bad by weeks end and hen don’t get consumed because I am too busy and if it takes longer than 40 minutes to eat a nutrient dense meal. I’d rather make 2-3 nutrient dense smoothies in my Blendtec and put them in fridge or order out. This is the real world right, who has time for that?
This brings me to the most important foundation for any change you implement , it NEEDS TO BE REALISTIC TO YOUR CURRENT LIFE LEVEL NOW. Will I have time to make that meal off IG in a 6 months to a year when I hire more staff and quite my day job? Absolutely! However this is today and today I realistically will not. By narrowly focusing on the end goal only and not the daily wins on the journey that gets me to that end point, I set myself up for failure. I feel crappy and I scold myself, which is complete waste of energy.
So now that I have examined the reality of my present goal and life accommodations. I know I have time in the morning before work begins and in the evening after work ends. I also know that meal prep requiring longer than 40 min on busy days will result in picking up something to go and not using what I have on hand. In order to combat that, I choose easy meals with whole plant based foods that require minimal if any cooking time to eat. This way I get a quick, fresh, homemade meal that is nutrient dense and keeps me at peak performance for my lifestyle.
To recap, I discovered the opportunity to develop new habits to for my system that will be easy to maintain long term. The system is to grocery shop only when I need to for the goal to stop wasting food and the habit is to do this before or after work. The result is I stop wasting food, I stop wasting money, I stop the stress of need to have a stocked fridge and thought process of what am I going to make.? The win is each day I strengthen my long term goal and I get to have quick access to easy nutrient rich foods that in turn keep me feeling my best.
I always root for people to create positive change in their lives. I also know that sometimes we need a little help getting to that bridge and the experience of a person who has successfully crossed over it. We have the ability to decide to create a new change for yourself every day, having the right mentality, and system in place is essentially for this to happen and thrive. So let’s recap together. Write this down on a piece of paper or napkin and discover the path to your success. As you progress with your journey you will find you need to modify these steps. Please keep this handy so when you have days that are challenging (and you will because growth and comfort DO NOT coexist) , you can reference where you started and how far you have come.
1. The goal
2. The habit
3. The system
4. The result
5. The Win
Thank you for supporting me and inspiring me to be my best self to give back to all of you. What good is knowledge and positive actions if they are not shared. I hope you take time to write down these easy steps and work on them daily, weekly and monthly. You are asking for a new life, you must create a new way of achieving this. The old system isn’t working, it’s time to let it go. If you feel scared (within reason) great! That means growth! See you back next Sunday for the latest blog!
