When I worked at the hospital and I was assigned to a surgical room where the case was on the surgery board as “amputation” It was 9/10 due to complications of Type II diabetes. I remember a feeling of frustration. If only the poor soul knew what they didn’t know. If only the patient had known to change their diet and they would have been able to reverse their diabetes. This day would never have arrived, they would not wake up in the recovery bay without toes, or a foot or a left, or both legs gone. I thought of the choices these patient made over and over. Each day watching their limbs die a little more each time till their fate was sealed, hitting the point of no return.
Type II diabetes is s symptom of the root problem which is insulin resistance in the body, now its’s 2019. I know we all understand by this point that it is a symptom of the root problem of poor diet choices. Saturated fats in the blood, processed foods and sugars are the culprit. Now you may be in denial and say that it’s genetic. Well yes and no. This exact phrase you will see in textbooks over and over.
“Genetics load the gun, environment pulls the trigger”
Without the proper environment, the genes won’t be expressed. So if you eat the poor foods that create the environment, then the genes will be expressed and yes you are gifting your future child weak genes. The poor health lifestyle creates a host of health issues increasing your likelihood of obesity, heart attack, stroke, cardiac disease, lifelong medications and blindness. The reason why this is good news is that, you can change the environment and turn off the expression for this reality. I know you may have heard whispered of people reversing their diabetes and coming off their medications by adopting a whole foods plant based diet.
To this I present to you one of my all-time favorite health documentaries that you can watch by clicking the link “Simply raw, reversing diabetes in 30 days” It’s a 2009 documentary put together by doctors, life coaches, health practitioners and chefs who literally put an ad in Craigslist to find people who wanted to cure their diabetes. Why I love the information in this documentary is because it gives people the tools and education they need to change their LIFESTYLE. This is not a diet, I don’t believe in diets, I will never in my life condone a diet. I despise diets, diets = bad = hamster wheel.
When you make a life style change, you have education that makes it possible for you to sustain this change for life. The people in the documentary were able to walk away totally changed people because they were given an opportunity to learn how to heal themselves naturally through whole foods. I have had the pleasure to have many conversation with my clients about what small change they can do to start the process of a health journey. I will always advocate for a whole foods plant based diet.
Yet when I recommend changing their mindset and lifestyle to a healthy one, most people meet with resistance because they are more willing to keep eating the foods that make them sick and keep taking insulin to “manage” their diabetes. I understand that food is the most widely abused drug on the planet and people have no clue they are addicts. Ask yourself, is my current lifestyle, the lack of self-care and physical activity, the low nutrient content of my food, the money I spend on doctors visit, medication and physical limitations placed on me worth eating the exact foods that put me in this position?
